@zetah: I looked thru different font files and looks like that indeed the change of the width only happens when there's no dedicated bold version of the font. I'm going to update the question with more screenshots.

That's not true. Fonts that have both regular and bold typefaces provided in separate files have same char width in regular and in bold. For example, LetterGothic.

comment How to merge a lot of folders into one?
Should the merge destination contain only files with no directories after the desired operation? Folders fol1 fol2 fol3 resides in the same source directory?

I don't understand the organization of the folders and files even after your edit. Do you need to sweep through the directory branch and copy all the files into one big pile< leaving the original directory structure intact, but empty?

That depends on how you have your folders organized. Do you want to merge ALL subfolders of a certain directory into one?

Tweaking with the host's serial console won't help, as the virtualized solution will be re-implemented on dedicated machine once the virtual setup is tuned. Also, the scrolling issue has already been coped with by blacklisting 'vga16fb'. At the moment, mode setting between grub and login prompt seems invalid. By the way, how know what driver is being used once 'vga16fb' has been disabled?

comment How do I increase console-mode resolution?
Looks like that at the moment grub2 doesn't use 'GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD' option, only 'GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX'. See the official documentation on grub2: gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html#gfxpayload
