comment Ubuntu 12.04 does not boot even with nomodeset
Yup, I see horizontal lines and screen flickering. I suggest you use the 'fglrx' driver instead. On the grub menu, just add the 'nomodeset' option when booting(choose ubuntu from grub, hit 'e' and add 'nomodeset' option and press 'ctrl+x'), and you can succesfully boot into Ubuntu. Then you can install the 'fglrx' drivers through the additional drivers option. Good luck!

comment Ubuntu 12.04 - default Radeon driver does not work at all
Hi, I ran the ppa-purge command again and reinstalled the ubuntu-x-swat driver(the 5 steps), and it booted successfully! I'm not sure if it was a simple mistake of mine or due to repairing the packages or running fsck before reinstalling that fixed the issue. Thanks a lot!

But I don't want to use fglrx, I want the open source drivers. From what I understand, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS uses the 'Radeon' driver (open source driver) by default. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Are you using an ATI card? Which driver are you using?

I agree, I never had problems with nvidia cards before. I'll see if the problem can be fixed first, and hopefully it will be fixed. thanks!

Ok, I've ran 'sudo apt-get --purge remove fglrx*' to remove fglrx and checked it by running 'dpkg -l fglrx*'. After that, I rebooted and nothing shows up on login screen. So I rebooted and added the 'nomodeset' option to boot it up somehow. I think the 'radeon' driver does not work well with my system. Should I try out the Ubuntu-x-swat one? Thanks!

hmm..I was having a problem before when I upgraded to 12.04, the screen was not showing anything, so I think I went ahead and installed fglrx. So I just need to purge fglrx and the 'radeon' driver would be activated? I'll try it and post the results, thanks!
