I've worked in IT for about 30 years (since 1980) starting when I was doing research at university and got the role of Computer Manager in the Physics department. I've been at IT Manager for much of my career, but in recent years have done more software development (SQLserver, VB.Net, ASP, etc) than IT administration.

Most of my professional work has been with Microsoft operating systems (currently Windows 7 at home) but I've kept up an interest in Linux throughout.

I first used Linux professionally in about 1995, when we used a server to filter or bounce junk email. At home, I currently maintain 2 systems running Linux. One is running Debian + MythTV which is used a Personal Video Recorder and general filestore (it has about 4 Tb of disks attached). The other runs Mythbuntu (Ubuntu+MythTV) and connects only by a WiFi connection which is configure to start before login. Both use HD TVs as monitors. In the past, I've configured my home systems to use soft RAID (md devices) and currently have the PVR system using LVM as it allows partitions to span drives (and is easily reconfigurable).

I also have a number of VirtualBox VMs, mostly various versions of Linux but there are a couple of Windows 2008 servers, which I use for 'playing'.

I am currently looking for a new job, having been made redundant due to reorganization, so if you know of an opening for a software development project manager...

Married, with several cats, but no kids. Still interested in Physics and Astronomy. :)
