I have been using Linux since the late 90's, and Ubuntu since warty. I work with Linux machines full time, and use an Ubuntu desktop for much of my programming.

Question about your network - are you on your own router, and are you able to get your own static IP's, or are you DHCP only?

comment For better performance should I install 32-bit or 64-bit?
This marks the catch 22 balance. 64 bit systems still have a few rough corners, and until enough people are willing to use it and report/deal with any remaining issues, it will stay a bit rough (flash support, some drivers etc), and until it is a bit less rough, many in the know would rather leave it..

What version of Ubuntu is it? Can you edit and add this? also - can you try the following: Boot up an ubuntu liveCD, then use that to investigate the installed ubuntu and get the output from tail | <your installed mount drive>/var/log/messages and the same for var\log\Xorg.0.log and add them to your question.

Can you tell us more about the system - specs - board, cpu, hdd, memory config, graphics card, cd/dvd drives etc? Also, you could try removing bits of hardware that are not the basics to see if that helps.

Screeching and crunching may mean that heads have basically hit the platters - pretty physical damage, and while some bits may be salvagable by a pro-service, there will be areas with enough possible damage that chunks are unrecoverable. Since I had enough data to put on a 1tb drive, I bought two and use the other as backup only (backupd/time machine).

Hmm - I have heard that noise before, though last time it was a 2/3Gb drive, and it was a windows one. The death throes of a drive are not a pleasant sound. The dmesg also pretty much revealed it's state - Unrecoverable read errors are a reasonable indicator it may be an ex-hard-drive. If you've nothing else to do with it - find a cool instructables thing to do with the platters and neodynium magnets!

Can you try that mount again, and then add the output of `dmesg | tail' to the question? It may reveal something.

If this works for him (ie the drive and partition are good), then it is an easy next step for us here to sort out an fstab entry for it.

Happy new year. If memtest86 (yes I meant that) stopped at 70% - then you have duff memory. If you have more than one memory card, try taking one out and running memtest again, you should be able to pinpoint which one is wrong.

And on your same machine Windows 7 boots just fine? Have you tried other CD's in that drive under Windows?

Are you sure? according to the spec for the board, it has "ASROCK I/O Plus - supports up to 8 USB2.0 ports". asrock.com/MB/overview.asp?Model=P4VT8%2B . They would be rear ports though.
