I have been using Linux since the late 90's, and Ubuntu since warty. I work with Linux machines full time, and use an Ubuntu desktop for much of my programming.

comment How can I move a boot partition onto a Flash drive?
Have you been able to identify which device the drive is in /dev?

comment How can I move a boot partition onto a Flash drive?
That would only apply for the root partition, which is not the same as boot. Boot could be tiny, as it would only have grub config, a kernel and an initrd image. It should easily fit into 256Mb. You would then need a larger drive though. Adding as a comment not answer, because I'd need to play with the hardware to know what'd work.

Could this be the difference between installing the latest from source vs installing what is currently in the apt repos?

Can you double check that this message is not saying "8% contiguous"? Thanks.

Can you share the ssh command line you are using? Do you have a .ssh/config file on the guest machine?

cool - looks like I didn't get the intent of the question. I think the answer above from enzotip looks good though.

comment What wireless mice work well with Ubuntu?
This is mostly true apart from mice with many additional user buttons, in which case all the normal functionality will work just fine and only the specialist bits will give any trouble.

I'd back this - also I suggest before trying to access mysql, start with the basics - try pinging the vbox machine from the host.

Which network settings do you have for the VM in vbox? Do you require other computers on the network to be able to access the vm? Do you require the vm to have access to the internet?
