comment Gnome-terminal tabs: no contrast between active and inactive tabs
Thanks... this stretch of my life has passed by, but next time I get the problem I'll try that!

comment Unable to access BIOS in my laptop after installing Ubuntu 14.04
The bios access has nothing to do with your operating system, because the bios loads before the OS location has even been identified. So this is entirely between you and your user manual (or on-screen prompts). Sony should be able to help, if all else fails. (Note: on my Vaio, I have to press and hold the 'assist' button during boot. Yours may be different).

comment Create USB installer from the command line?
Best answer. One suggested improvement is to use pv on the input stream to dd, so the user gets progress feedback (i.e. pv reads the iso, streams it to dd, and displays progress on stderr).

comment What is a good alternative to the sux command?
But that's messy to do on each login. It's cleaner to fixup your /etc/sudoers so that the HOME and DISPLAY values of tom are preserved when he does a 'sudo -u jerry bash' to open a shell as jerry. There are comments in sudoers which explain how to propagate environment variables across a sudo call. Be sure to use visudo when editing sudeors so you don't lock yourself out of the machine if you screw up!

Yeah, I do that sort of thing all the time. There are 2 things to understand: ~/.Xauthority for the "outer" user needs to become the .Xauthority for the inner user too, and the DISPLAY variable setup by ssh needs to match in the inner shell. So you could, for example, copy the ~/.Xauthority file from '/home/tom' to /home/jerry, fixup the permissions, set the DISPLAY value in the 'jerry' shell. When launching an X program as jerry, the DISPLAY value would tell the X libs how to find the display, and the .Xauthority file in /home/jerry would give it the auth data.

Do you really need this? If your sudoers options are setup just so (i.e. so that sudo preserves HOME when changing identities), it should not be necessary to do anything special with .Xauthority. That's how my laptop is configured, and I never use sux... just 'sudo {command}'

comment version of glib
Ok, well that sounds like a pretty specialized tool, not something you can just replace with an alternative. I think what you really want from the developers is a more complete description of their build environment. Typically these older code bases are dependent on a bunch of stuff, I doubt that just installing an old glib will solve your problems. My guess is that the developers are using old build system(s) that haven't changed in many years and they barely remember what's installed!

That's going pretty far back in time. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, but I would probably consider alternative solutions first. What's the tool? What's the end goal you're trying to accomplish? Maybe there's a different path that goes through fewer weeds?

Are you sure that the app won't compile against glib-2? Have you tried that?

Agree with @Rinzwind: run Windows in a VM. I've used both VirtualBox and VMWare workstation, they both work but I have had fewer problems with VMWare... it just seems to do a better job of integrating with the subtler issues like making the keyboard/mouse/video work smoother. But either will work.

Do you know of any way to make it put the terminal on the side instead of the top/bottom?
