Launchpad only cares about the email address (for attribution of revisions), not about the display name associated with it.

It does make a difference - if you specify the raw IP address in the UNC, then the client can't send a valid NetBIOS name to the server. Some servers will break if they don't get a valid NetBIOS name.

write operations aren't supported over http/https. There is a webdav plugin which enables them, but launchpad doesn't support webdav.
