comment Prevent monitor from losing signal after screen saver / lock activates
Note that the ~/.xinitrc didn't work for me (using GNOME Classic); I instead put the xset -dpms into System Tools > Preferences > Startup Applications.

Works for me, too. Thanks a lot; you've really earned the bounty with your persistence!

The operating system turns off the video signal; any monitor is then forced to react. Yes, this problem isn't limited to Ubuntu (but that's what I'm using), but I mostly see issues with other shared components (like Gnome, Firefox, etc.) discussed here as well, so I think it is on-topic.

comment How can I get a DisplayLink USB monitor work under Ubuntu?
Thank you so much (finally)! I can confirm this working with an HP NL571AA USB Graphics Adapter, Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS 64-bit, and a HP 1955 19" (tertiary) monitor. I only had to switch from the binary NVIDIA drivers to the open source Nouveau ones to make it work.

comment Is there any way to execute a shell script whenever I open a terminal?
Note that .bashrc is also executed when you open another bash inside the existing terminal. So it isn't a 100% match of the specification.

comment VI Editor in Ubuntu 12.4.2 (LTS)
The download links are at the bottom of the linked page; you can choose between 32-/64-bit versions. The will get you a *.deb file which you can then install with dpkg -i *.deb.

Are you uncomfortable with modal editing in general? Type vimtutor to get an introduction. Or try a more straightforward editor like nano.

Also, your question is more about your Ubuntu system environment, not about programming, so it's better addressed at SuperUser.

The vi command that ships with Ubuntu is the tiny version of Vim. What "problem" do you have with it?

comment Unable to restart Apache, getting error: apache2: bad user name ${APACHE_RUN_USER}
The first block can probably keep referencing the environment variables; the crucial step is defining them in /etc/apache2/envvars!

comment How do I install an application by DEB file for a single user only?
Projects based on autoconf may allow to set a custom install dir via ./configure --prefix=$HOME/local.

comment Conky dropping shadow when invoked at startup
FYI: I use Ubuntu 12.04 with the "GNOME Classic" desktop. There is no process gtk-window-deco, so I use the static delay.
