Musician, the Netherlands

Started with Mac, switched to Windows and finally ended up with Ubuntu, just before Unity was introduced (must have been somewhere in 2011).

comment How does one read the contents of a text file located on the desktop using the terminal?
if this really is the desired answer to the question (which is unclear to me), you are forgetting the semicolon (;) after Desktop, and the fact that cat needs an argument (file). Also, he is logging in as root (!) (at least that is what I understand)

It's not really clear to me, you want to save your files, but where does reading a text file on the desktop using terminal get on stage?

comment How can I auto-hide the launcher via a script, when I maximize the browser?
@user3078796 maybe we should remove some (if not all) of our comments, it's getting quite a story. Updated my answer. The vulnerability of the script is that it has to a.] get the (possible) pids of the applications you set b.] get the connected windows (wmctrl) c.] check if any of these windows is maximized and/or iconized. If during this procedure anything changes in the state of the windows, there is a possible clash. I fixed that, I hope, by adding an except in the fetch-function itself. Will possibly do some optimization later. errors I caused on purpose did not crash the script now.

comment icons for unity-folders
a few examples: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1155139/… or dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1155139/… these examples are related to the icon, but it can be anything: directories, url's, applications etc.

comment icons for unity-folders
You do know that you can create shortcuts (quicklists) anyway in the launcher (without icons)? No additional software needed (although it does exist)

It is a bit hidden in the question, but apart from sorting, OP wants to move the files to (newly created?) folders, like in the (imo) duplicate, asked by Kasiya.
