Musician, the Netherlands

In the days that people could show off with their computer with no less than 2 mb ram, I decided I did not like working with computers, however, things went a bit differently afterwards ;).

Started with Mac, switched to Windows and finally ended up with Ubuntu, just before Unity was introduced (must have been somewhere in 2011).

Apart from that, I am addicted to good food, nice wine and doing a bit of coding.

Welcome to Askubuntu! "I too have the same problem" assumes users can see what it is that you are referring to, which is not the case; a question is a standalone thing. As it is now your question is not quite clear.

I do not have an answer, but I simply think Unity does not accept anymore that application windows are grouped under another icon than the icon of the "native" desktop file, meaning: the desktop file with the application-command as its native command. That is actually a good thing, and I indeed noticed more consistancy and less errors in how desktop files behave in the launcher lately. However, I think your solution does not work anymore, as I tried myself.

...it is okay, I think it is good enough. To make it something nice, I need to be at home, will look at it then if noone else does.

can be done very well, even make the icon toggle, depending on the connection. only thing is that you need to identify if the vpn is on or off. if you run in a terminal the command route, is there a identifying difference between off or on?

I see, I removed my answer because I think I misunderstood your setup and what you want to achieve ;) I have to run, will look into it tonight (unless someone else solved the problem in the meantime)
