Yep I did the same, thankfully my Dell laptop had an option to disable usb 3, rebooted and hey presto, scanner works fine now (btw mine is a epson scansnap 1300i).

comment How can I suspend/hibernate from command line?
Perfect, thanks the pm-suspend was exactly what I was after without having to install all the X related junk with the powermanagement-interface package. All that's needed to use pm-* is the the pm-utils package.

comment Ubuntu 12.04 dropbox icon missing in tray (no working solution)
@Antonios thats quite possible, but it is the same icon I have had all along and it does function the same way it always has - for me anyway - it has the drop down menu, showing the sync status, recently changed files, etc

comment Ubuntu 12.04 dropbox icon missing in tray (no working solution)
Not sure why it didnt work for others but it did for me and I didnt need to logout, just adding 'dropbox' to the whitelist while it was stopped (via cli 'dropbox stop') and then running dropbox start brought the tray icon back for me.

comment How do I check the health of a SSD?
Props for including the link to Samsungs documentation of their SMART attributes. I have no idea what those other applications you mentioned are or how useful they are, but I would strongly recommend you simply keep an eye on the Attribute #5 "Reallocated Sector Count" as this will be a good indicator of how close your SSD is to failure, as once it runs out of spare sectors it has to use to replace the ones that go bad then you'll be nearing EOL on your SSD

comment Fujitsu S1300i advances document but doesn't scan
I've pretty much seen the same thing and that included building my own sane from source. The last I'd seen about this printer on the sane mailing list when I looked earlier in the year is that its completely unsupported by sane and its operation is different enough to the other models that it would have to be reverse engineered from scratch.

comment Scanner detected with sane-find-scanner, but not with scanimage -L or sudo scanimage -L
@ZachLatta I know its been a while but did you ever get a chance to setup your scanner again and note down how you got it working?

comment Scanner detected with sane-find-scanner, but not with scanimage -L or sudo scanimage -L
@Crynix thanks that would be great as I've tried compiling sane backends from src from different versions in git and no luck. I should also mention that I'm using the pre-installed sane from 12.04 though I don't think that would make a difference. And I assume also you used the 1300i_0D12.nal firmware file?

@Crynix could you confirm that you were able to get your s1300i actually outputting scans? As I've had a similar experience to @petur and only get scanimage: sane_start: Error during device I/O when trying to scan using scanimage after compiling the current git HEAD of sane from src as well as the commit that matched the 1.0.23 release.
