Why is Unity 2D being discontinued? The biggest drawback is that Nvidia and AMD don't play ball. They simply won't release fully functioning open drivers. This is fine if you want a novelty OS to boot into but if you are a serious user using Ubuntu professionally and you have modern GFX then then kiss Ubuntu goodbye or at the very least say goodbye to stability. Additionally, when the 3d does work everything is undeniably slower. I'm a turbo user, constantly using keyboard shortcuts and fast switching between windows and it simply does not cut it. |

At Present Which is the best choice for a Ubuntu graphics card, AMD or nVidia? Having an HD5870 card has been a non-stop pain in the butt. I'm looking at getting an new generation Nvidia card but I'd rather get some advice before shelling out £500. As far as I'm concerned, the ATI card needs smashing with a hammer. I can either use the propriety drivers for 3D but loose all desktop stability or use the non-propriety drivers and loose 3D. ATI driver support is ppor, but are Nvidia better? |

ATI or Nvida for my Ubuntu Machine? No website that I can think of but if you wish I can elaborate further. When I said pointlessly I did not mean it does not have a point. I meant pointlessly as in meaningless, unproductive, futile, ineffectual. By slow, I meant really, really slow. I have an I7 machine with striped SSDs on a dedicated controller. With the proprietary drivers installed (and I mean every proprietary driver from ATI since the card was available, and testing in Mint, Centos, Redhat, even in other machines) the system crawls along. |

ATI or Nvida for my Ubuntu Machine? Hi Jo, just to make myself clear, this isn't a question about how to get a driver working. It's broader than that. If you are interested, I have tried just about every propriety and non-propriety release out there and and not just on Ubuntu eiether. Having a card that just works is a big part of my requirement. |
