comment Black Screen with cursor - Booting from HardDisk & LiveCD
I see you have extensively tried to find the issue (Very few do it so methodologically so kudos). I would test without a hard drive, only RAM and MOBO/CPU. Insert a LiveUSB and run Memtest, let it run for 1 full pass, then go to the Live Ubuntu and play around with it (Internet, office, sound, terminal commands like lshw, lspci, etc..) For like an hour to make sure it is not the motherboard. Just in case you feel it is the motherboard (Because of lack of maintenance for example), my way of solving this is mentioned on the comment below because am out of characters ^^

@Liarez would be awesome if you could create a question about, mentioning you already read this answer. Also include your hardware.

comment No wifi at ALL Ubuntu 14.10
Also happening with a Qualcomm Atheros and a Broadcom b4313 so I do not think this is limited to the Intel. The procedure is basically the same. Connect a bluetooth speaker (In my case I tried the Samsung Bluetooth earphone) and after that, the whole Network Manager started having problems. Between failed connections and not offering an option to connect there is some relation between the bluetooth and the wireless here I would think.

comment How do I get a Ralink RT3290 wireless card working?
It actually worked on 13.04 up to 14.04. The problem was that I was denied sharing the minor fixes. The code will work but you need to do some light clean up on it to avoid those warnings. I do no have the card anymore but I wrote to ralink about sharing the uploaded code here and I basically got a no go.

comment How to block specific apps from opening in specific accounts
Right now the security level is minimal. The users would only need to be denied access (by any means) to any type of app. The users I would guess have a low knowledge of Linux and probably will never use the terminal but you could add any information about it.

comment How to enable or disable services?
Ok I have tested postgres and postfix at least. Both work correctly ether using the old /etc/init.d path or the service command. Both do not work when using the upstart shortcuts (start, stop, restart, status) so I made a update on that part. You should at least be able to manage them using the other 2 ways.

@JoeMurray Thanks for the feedback. Let me get back to you with an answer when I get home. For what I remember, postgres for example can have multiple instances on Ubuntu, so it needs to be managed in another way.

comment Enable Mic in Wine ? (Alsa/Pulseaudio)
Which version of Ubuntu are you using. I ask since Wine 1.5 is not supported/default on Ubuntu since a couple of versions ago. If you are not using a supported Ubuntu version and an upgraded Wine (Like 1.6 or 1.7) then you will have many problems getting an answer.

@earthmeLon Read the answer by Oli which mentions how to create the example file. Then proceed with the commands I used.

comment How to install Hadoop?
The 2nd update lines is optional for anyone that ones to use the PPA, there are other alternatives. The 1st one is to update and upgrade the system in one line. The 2nd line just shows the same line because we added an additional PPA (which is optional depending on who wants to use it).

comment How to add software RAID-1 to an existing non-RAID system?
I would first ask how many disks you have with the same size (Need at least 2). Where is the boot part of Ubuntu (in sda, sdb, sdc...). In case you have only one disk, then how many partitions have you setup (in case you want a RAID 1 using only one physical disk but you will loose the whole point of raid1) which have the same size. Also you do not need to do anything to grub until we can understand what you actually have and how it is configured right now. Other than that, excellent question.

comment 14.10 System turn off display and don't response
Can you check the comment by Bulrush and also explain exactly at what point of the boot stage does the display turn off? Is it before the grub menu, when the BIOS appears, after grub menu, when lightdm is starting, when the desktop appears? For the freezing part, I would recommend booting a LiveUSB and from the ubuntu menu select memtest just in case.

Did you try recovery mode, changing boot options on the grub menu like noacpi. Did you try anything already?

Hi travisb, is it possible for you to upgrade to 14.04 or even 14.10. This way we can help you better since 13.10 is officially not supported. You can see which versions are still supported in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
