Why does Software Centre ask for root password when the default is for root to be disabled with no password set? I never did find a proper answer to WHY it was doing this I'm afraid. I simply put a password on root and it worked OK. |

Synchronize wireless passwords between computers They can be accessed via the "System Settings" tool under "Network". |

Synchronize wireless passwords between computers There is a Windows tool for LastPass Premium customers that does this. Personally, I use the secure note facility which allows me to keep whatever information I like & share it with other LastPass users if needed. Just create one or more notes containing your WiFi passwords then you can easily copy and paste. If the computer doesn't have LastPass installed, you can simply log in to the web site to get the note. |

How do I keep terminal line from overwriting itself? OK, so what happens if you set PS1 to something rather simpler? Say something like \u@\h: \w\a\ or just zzzzzzzzzzzzz> (just to keep it long). |

How do I keep terminal line from overwriting itself? Ah. OK, I suspect the setting for the PROMPT now. Can you post the values of PS1 and TERM. In fact, post the line defining PS1 in .bashrc |

Need a way to restrict maximum screen size due to monitor hardware issues If you need specific help on changing the screen resolution, you need to let us know what video hardware and what driver you are using. |

Denied access to an ext4 partition after doing a `mount -a` command One question - how big is the drive? There can be issues with drives >2.1TB. Other than that, the fstab entry looks ok & ext4 is fine so nothing there. That's why I kind of assume it must be a permissions issue. |

Denied access to an ext4 partition after doing a `mount -a` command Also, if you are just starting out with Ubuntu, you are probably better off using the latest release (12.04) if you can. |

How to move a window between monitors with Gnome Shell? This is a duplicate of askubuntu.com/questions/28086/… - I've flagged it for closure. |

How to move a window between monitors with Gnome Shell? Just to confirm - do you mean with Gnome desktop or Unity? |

Running a script with root privileges A couple of questions. Why don't you want to use SUDO? Wouldn't it be better to run this using an init.d script? |

JSLint/JS Formatter for Kate Understand and sympathise with your reasoning on the switch. Of course, if time is money as "they" say, Windows may still be cheaper! But not for all use cases. gVIM and VIM/VI in general makes me shudder! I've tried GVIM several times but I just can't get on with it. Before I used Sublime, I used to use Kate on KDE desktops. Now I tend to use Gnome - Gedit is similar to Kate. And yes, NP++ was my Windows choice before I discovered Sublime. I've also used the free Komodo Edit as well for development - it's pretty good and also is cross-platform. |

Ubuntu does not work with Nvidia drivers, gives random squares after logging in OK, glad you got it. Linux is great when it works first time but a bit of a nightmare when it doesn't! |

Ubuntu 12.04 Fullscreen Video Dual Screen You need to tell us: What browser (I assume Firefox), what video card and what X settings you have. For example are you using TwinView? |

Documents stored on separate internal drive, Ubuntu doesn't notice on startup Just a note: I do something similar to this BUT, I have an installation script (because I occasionally switch distro's) that deletes the "My Documents", "My Videos", etc. folders in a newly created home folder and replaces them with LINKs to to data drive. |

Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04. The system is running in low-graphics All of the system logs are in /var/log so you can see them there. syslog contains most information but I would start with dmesg which contains the information you would see when the system is starting up. There is lot to wade through, it take a while to get your eyes and brain adjusted to spotting errors. |
