comment What is this PS1 variable doing in .bash_profile file?
You can customize the prompt however you like. The "myname-macbook-pro" is basically your username and your hostname. You can customize the hostname with the hostname command or by editing /etc/hostname. See this article for detailed information on how to create your own custom prompt format.

comment Google Chrome causing file system to mount as read only
This looks like a problem introduced by the fs resizes that fsck isn't detecting. Probably not an easy fix. The only thing I could recommend is copying off your valuable data to another medium then reinstall the OS on a new filesystem.

comment My Rhythmbox plugin can't meet the Ubuntu Software Center “my-app” requirements
Lastly, politics aside, isn't the point of USC's app developer channels precisely that they aren't in the main archives? If the solution to my query is "get your app in the archives", what purpose does USC my-app serve?

comment My Rhythmbox plugin can't meet the Ubuntu Software Center “my-app” requirements
Great suggestions, @JanC, but since the package requirements say I can't add symlinks, it's no good. I could add a symlink to /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins from /opt, and it'd work for sure, but the BIG uncertainty is whether it would pass scrutiny by app reviewers. I'm guessing "no".
