I'm not sure exactly what these version mismatches would be and how I would know if I have them. Also unsure how to check for non-free drivers -- it's a (usually) headless server so there shouldn't be non-free graphics drivers for instance.

I should point out that this doesn't always happen so soon. Right now, for instance, it's been up for almost 5 days and is getting on just fine. Full hwinfo at sprunge.us/EbOe -- in short, it's a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H board with an Athlon 64 X2 4200+, two 1G sticks of ram. No tweaking/overclocking. MB looks fine, cables are tight, nothing seems particularly hot. Does this give any clues? I'll run memtest when I get a chance to take it down for a few hours.

Is there a good resource you can recommend which shows how to perform such verifications? I'm aware of memtest but nothing else.

comment Can't start Psychonauts game — segfault
That plus the force_s3tc_enable=true environment variable mentioned in askubuntu.com/questions/145522/… did the trick -- thanks. Sadly it's unplayably slow on my laptop anyway.
