comment Software recommendations for writing a novel?
LibreOffice (which you are already using) also supports the concept of "Global Documents" consisting of multiple sub-documents. It's more than 15 years ago I've used that (back with its pre-decessor StarOffice on DOS), but it should be worth a try: Make each chapter a separate document to deal with, and whenever you need the whole thing, call up the global "master document".

comment How to remove typed-in URLs from browser history in Firefox?
Thanks for the explanation, @Nattgew – I was just about to ask if that shouldn't read "42" instead ;) // user283259: Still open question to me, how to calculate that number so it kicks off only those URLs I want to get rid off. My question was not about disabling auto-complete generally, but just to remove several URLs from appearing within (quoting from the question: switching auto-complete off altogether is no option for me). So does your answer fit that – and if so, how?

comment Can't boot Galaxy S I9000 into recovery mode to install Ubuntu
There are several questions over at our sister site of Android Enthusiasts which you might wish to consult: Galaxy S GT-I9000: how to fix boot to recovery with Volume up+Power? coming close, and Cannot boot into recovery (Samsung Galaxy S) seemingly describing exactly your issue (letting the boot-loop part aside). For more, please check these 21 related questions.

comment Why are none of my startup commands being executed?
.profile is executed at login, .bashrc whenever you start a new bash shell (and there's also the .xprofile, executed on start of the X-Window session). And you might have needed to add the sh because you didn't make startup.sh executable (chmod +x startup.sh).

Back to the .bashrc (or .profile) suggestion. If I got that right, the password was the only issue there. If so, you could define this command for your user not requiring a sudo password (via a corresponding line in /etc/sudoers.d/user-alias, e.g. dave ALL = NOPASSWD: /home/dave/startup.sh, and then execute sudo /home/dave/startup.sh from your .bashrc/.profile.

comment In Ubuntu, is there any terminal that allows for the position of the cursor to be moved with the mouse?
For native terminal, you will probably have no luck. See the mouse section in the terminal howto of The Linux Documentation Project.

comment How to install monitorx?
To save you the hazzle of manually downloading and solving the dependencies, you could also use the repository at apt.izzysoft.de with your sources.list – and the side-effect of receiving updates automatically. // Disclosure: I'm the above mentioned packager and the repository owner/maintainer. I work together closely with Jordi (dev of Monitorix) on this package, so updates are usually coming in-time.
