comment Replace xscreensaver With gnome-screensaver (Xubuntu)
Unfortunately, gnome-screensaver-preferences is no longer shipped along with 12.04 (and up). So how does configuration take place now? I'm not that much concerned about fancy stuff, but e.g. configuring screen timeout.

comment Evolution slow when sending mail or switching between components
@Shauna just a friendly ping: looks like I've identified the culprit. My old Nemesis again. After waiving it goodby, all things snappy here -- see my second answer. Breaking up that short before the "silver wedding", eh! But I've got no reason to stay any longer, as my "partner" changed so drastically to no longer be recognizable...

comment Evolution slow when sending mail or switching between components
Unfortunately, not much changes: once a week I have to restart Evolution. After a fresh start, it works almost normally for a while -- but gets slower with the time again, until it becomes unbearable and I've got to restart again. Looks like I'll have to live with that at least until the next system switch. :(

comment Sharing Evolution Mail local folders
Glad it worked -- and thanks for the feedback! Well, using Nautilus (GUI) or the command line directly, it gives the same result :) Please watch it closely for a while, and don't forget to report back if you encountered any "late issues". Of course, a comment like "3 months heavy use, and still works fine" is at least as welcome :D

comment Sharing Evolution Mail local folders
In that case (locally attached drive) symlinks could do: try to symlink ~/.local/share/evolution/mail/local from the USB attached disk to the same place on the other client. Pre-condition: Both use the same userID, or access would fail due to permissions. Let me know the results then; if it works out fine, I should make that an answer with some additional details ;)

comment Where are the Evolution data files stored?
Don't forget: $HOME/.gconf/apps/evolution for more config files (those of the several components like addressbook, calendar, mail).

I doubt both clients are running on the same machine. How is the storage shared then? NFS? In that case it might work with symlinks. However, note that Evolution has multiple data locations; I'm not sure if it works just sharing the one containing the "local folders", but it might.

Could you add a few more details on what you want to achieve? // I'm afraid sharing mail folders might lead to trouble when two clients want to write-access them simultaneously -- so the least you had to take care for in such a case is that always only one of the clients is running, however you do the actual "sharing".

comment Evolution setup
Once you've finished the setup of a new account, Evolution usually tries to retrieve mail immediately, and thus should ask you for the password -- it always did for me. That's what's meant with the "first login". You also could try pushing the send/receive button to trigger this.

comment How to remove typed-in URLs from browser history in Firefox?
Thanks a lot, that describes about what I just experienced. I still wonder, as I had no "readwrite.com" bookmark (but of course visited one specific page there), how to get rid of all entries for that domain without completely disabling auto-complete. I thought opening the suggestion and then deleting the urlbar content did it; but when I did so for the second "r" domain, readwrite.com was back. So I might need to update my question to better explain the entire dilemma... +1 meanwhile :)

Thanks, Dan! But that seems not always to work. I have e.g. "readwrite.com" somewhere in the history. As soon as I start typing "r", that's the suggested URL. But it's not contained in the drop-down list. So how to delete it, if I cannot select it? I tried to completely mark it in the address bar, and hit 'delete' key then. But that doesn't seem to remove it: Next time I start typing 'r' (even in a different tab), it's displayed again. If I simply hit "enter" (so the page is open), it's no longer suggested then (even after closing the tab, ugh!)
