I was wondering how that nice USB sniff log was obtained, so I hope it's OK to jot it down here: managed to find relevant info here and here. I found sudo tshark -i usbmon2 -V in Ubuntu produces that kind of log directly in terminal's stdout. Cheers!

comment How to hold a package back from being upgraded?
The worst thing about this is that locking the package in synaptic has absolutely no influence on apt-get - even if you lock in synaptic, apt-get will still want to upgrade the packages (check with dpkg --get-selections packagename afterwards); so the package_name hold | sudo dpkg --set-selections is required for apt-get, independently of synaptic. Cheers!

Many thanks for that, @OctavianDamiean - unfortunately, the bugtracker page now says "Drupal Site off-line - The site is currently not available due to technical problems. Please try again later. Thank you for your understanding.", and there is no google cache, nor archive.org cache. Damn it - I so wanted to read what the problem is! This Ubuntu bug refers to that page, though: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/752829 ... Many thanks again - cheers!

comment How to restart only missing/invisible mouse pointer/cursor?
Hi @BlueXrider - many thanks for your answer! That PC "is missing a keyboard", so I cannot press Alt-F2 :) However, I tried the sudo modprobe psmouse via ssh, and that unfortunately does not show the mouse pointer after suspend wake (apparently, this is gnome bug, not mouse driver bug). Ubuntu 10.04 also complains: "sudo: /etc/init.d/hotplug: command not found"... Cheers!
