comment How can I modify the default behaviour of Ubuntu 12.04 (& 12.10) to prevent a symbolic link from /dev/shm to /run/shm ever being created on boot up?
Note also mikesmithers.wordpress.com/2012/09/25/… which rather moves and rebinds /dev/shm to /run/shm

comment How do I upgrade from x86 to x64 without losing settings?
This guide actually worked for me, though it takes a lot of fiddling on the way and you really need to be an Ubuntu/Debian expert. Lots of packages break and you have to manually figure out how to fix them. Not for the faint of heart, and for most people (as others recommended here), you should just do a clean install and restore your config

comment RipOff 0.8.3 not finding ANY plugins
RipOff doesn't seem to have had a release since 2007; I'm suspecting this won't be fixed, and am rather using the software in Doug McMahon's PPA: launchpad.net/~mc3man/+archive/ubuntu/cdda1 - that contains fixes to the problems I had with asunder.

comment USB Keyboard not working in Xubuntu session - How to debug?
I've put the sed stuff in that I actually use to make this work; but I don't have it running every second, I just run it on need. Presumably it could be made to detect the plug event and run then? Any ideas?

comment USB Keyboard not working in Xubuntu session - How to debug?
@Lekensteyn - thank you! xinput list --long does indeed report it as disabled, and enabling makes it work. So I can at least script a way to enable it (though when I plug it out and in it still ends up disabled). Still curious as to why, but if you post an answer (even a very simple one) then I can give you the bounty...
