comment Fan making noise while running ubuntu
@Chandru1, you could be using Windows, or another computer. I've seen only one other issue in my polling of the internet, and the suggestion received was either that the computer wasn't in the right power mode (but for the five laptops I've installed ubuntu on that seems unlikely because it does that automatically) or that the computer is broken and needs to go back to acer. That doesn't seem right because you said Windows worked fine. If it's a new computer it might just be that you need to run the battery down all the way and charge it back up to see if the fan stops.

@Chandru1, is it connected to the internet, I've found lots of issues about the wifi not working with Linux, if it's not connected, it might not be getting to the restricted drivers list.

@Chandru1, check what? I don't know what computer you have, so I can't check it for you. I would be able to give a clearer answer with that information. To check for restricted drivers go to administration -> restricted drivers.

comment How do I restore Grub after Windows has deleted it
Technically windows didn't write over grub, it's still there, you just have to tell bios to use the linux partition instead of the windows partition. Also, while not technically an answer you're looking for, there's a tool you can use to specify different operating systems to be in the windows boot menu called EasyBCD - neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1

This isn't really an Ubuntu question, but a video/audio question.

Jolicloud is an ubuntu derivative.

comment Default mount options on auto-mounted NTFS partitions (how to add `noexec` and `fmask=0111`?)
But by default files on fat32 drives are set to not executable. Hence kind of a solution.

comment Missing Sound After Cleanup and Moving of Home Directory
It's Pulse Audio (.pulse), and I found the exact problem wasn't permissions (everything was set to 0777), but ownership, so the root was still owner, not me.

you can't, read the second paragraph. You would have to switch all of those drives to fat32 to keep them compatible and non-executable by default.

I got a slightly different error, instead of Home directory /home/alpha not ours I got "Failed to create secure directory: Permissions denied".
