comment Scanning Windows for Rootkits using Linux
Thank you, I've been using a combination of "Combo Fix" and Malawarebytes in Safe Mode, and Then installing the free Avast Anti-Virus as it's boot-up scan does a really good job, and because it has a Free Remote Desktop Feature (but I have no Windows machines myself so not too useful) I just wanted to use really Freedom Based Software to do this, but with Microsoft locking things even tighter, this will get harder, not easier. :-(

comment Keyboard volume shortcuts in XUBUNTU don't work
Is there not a way to change volume and other settings in the command line (Terminal actually) ?? Why can't these be used to "Add" a new shortcut there? I am having similar problem just that I want to use other keys for volume and other things too.

Side note, don't you have to install libdvdcss2 first before running that install-css.sh things? It helped the install-css2 do the various processes it needed to?

I've done that prior to trying this disk. And though I can't seem to find any Disney DVD's round here to test with as I've heard they have the most problems. But the movie "King Kong" plays fine, as well as the one of the season disks of Eureka. I have also tested in more than one DVD drive as I have 2 with this computer (one is an 10 plus year old Compaq from my first ever computer) and neither has any luck with this weird one, but play all other dvd's fine. Again, the disk does have videos on it, as it plays in a DVD player fine. Just a weird 80's style menu. Almost looks like a BIOS.

Yes, and VLC is my default on everything, even my Android devices. But here it gives me this messages "Playback failure: DVDRead could not open the disc "/media/daniel/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER". Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///media/daniel/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER'. Check the log for details." If I knew where VLC's logs were I would try to include them.

comment cant play certain dvd's on ubuntu/mint
If I'm not mistaken once you are able to play "restricted" DVD's at all, then those instructions Hugo shared are no longer relevant as you have probably already done that at some point. The ending part of this article may help as it mentions libdvdcss2 may have been removed before you enabled DVD playback before and offers a ppa for it. Just grasping at possibilities though. ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/04/… I will try to find some disney DVD's and try them myself today.

comment Sharing files and devices between 2 Linux machines
No answer takers yet :-( I have tried all "flavors" of Ubuntu at this point, and none have been intuitive to connect to machines together in this way. Why??? I think its the year 2014 right? not 1994?

Those are an interesting read. But between 2 Linux machines, Samba is not necessary as its intented to bridge between Windows and Linux, where Linux works natively.-----And though I could probably learn alot from reading about NFS, I know for sure I didn't go through all that with the older versions of Ubuntu, so things should be gettings easier newer versions, not harder. --------The only thing I might have done is right click on a directory > Properties > Then seen a "Sharing" tab at the top, or maybe was under permission, then allowed for everything. All GUI. Why is this not standard???

Haha true, but some apps have been relatively rock solid, despite my enjoyment of distro hopping. Guake, Synapse (GnomeDo clone) GDebi installer, Xiphos Bible software. Love graphical Linux is lately, while still being solid. :-)
