🐌. Native speaker of American English. Linux user. Familiar with several programming languages in the procedural, OO, and functional paradigms.

Link rot is evil. Archive everything. The keyboard is king. Correctness over performance. Canonicalize, normalize, deduplicate. Don't repeat yourself. UTF-8 > UTF-16. Use static typing: good for tooling. Re-use; don't re-invent. Correctness, then clarity, then concision and elegance. Play devil's advocate. First understand opponents' positions.

comment How do I install the ray-tracing application POV-Ray on 12.04?
POV-Ray is now released under the Affero GPL, so it will probably return to the repositories within a few releases.

comment How can I suspend/hibernate from command line?
This works under KDE too, except it doesn't lock the screen. You can do that with qdbus org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver /ScreenSaver Lock.

comment What is the screen locking mechanism under KDE?
qdbus seems to be broken under Saucy, but it works if you install the package qdbus-qt5.

comment Keeping local folders synchronized
+1 for backup rather than sync. Sync means that if your first folder gets messed up, when you connect the other drive it will get clobbered.

@Rmano: According to that article, modern Ethernet hardware auto-negotiates so crossover cables are not needed. I've also done this before with ordinary Ethernet cables.

comment What determines PPA updates after new Ubuntu releases?
@ThomasW.: I'm asking about the PPA updating process, not how to remove dead PPAs.

comment What determines PPA updates after new Ubuntu releases?
But don't Launchpad-hosted PPAs get automatically built? So presumably Launchpad handles managing the repository directories.

The terminal copy/paste commands are Ctrl-Shift-C and Ctrl-Shift-V, at least in gnome-terminal and konsole.

comment Can I mount disc in Windows style?
Linux allows colons in filenames, so you could even do /C:/.

Is Skype a GTK2 app? Then it would use the GNOME 2 theme settings, which may be different from most apps.

Uninstall the kernels through the package manager. Don't just delete the files.

@Ads20000: The script is being run as root, so that will have no effect.

@Axel: What's the output of which firefox and cat "$(which firefox)"? Perhaps you installed a second copy of Firefox from outside the package manager, which is taking precedence.
