I think the HUD actually has some potential to solve this problem. I drafted this Ubuntu brainstorm idea to create a spec for future apps and hack the old ones through the HUD interface (DBUS, I guess?).

comment How do I change the default text editor?
I don't know how, but by copying this command I accidentally cleared the whole file. I would much prefer doing this in a text editor using find-replace (as explained in this answer) for those who are not too familiar with sed.

Thanks, you've made things a bit clearer! Basically, always try to find the source trunk and do the change there. Afterwards, talk to the package maintainer and try to get the newer upstream version (when it's deemed stable enough) into the currently developed Ubuntu version. Make the change in Ubuntu packages only when nothing else is possible.
