Thanks, you've made things a bit clearer! Basically, always try to find the source trunk and do the change there. Afterwards, talk to the package maintainer and try to get the newer upstream version (when it's deemed stable enough) into the currently developed Ubuntu version. Make the change in Ubuntu packages only when nothing else is possible.

comment How come many of the AppShowdown apps aren't available in Ubuntu anymore?
Thanks for the info, Michael. Personally, I think that automatic propagation with bug reports if any problems are detected would be nicer. The usual answer I found when asking MyApps app developers about 12.10 is "just install the old 12.04 .deb file, it still works". Most of the core technologies (e.g. Python, C++, gcc, Qt, GTK) don't change that often and even if they do, they go through the slow and steady deprecation process with warnings etc. Even if an API change causes some program to crash is easy to report and better than 100s of users meddling with old .deb files IMHO.

comment 12.04 upgrade from 11.10 stuck at restoring previously installed packages
Well, then it shouldn't be offered as an option when starting a live usb installation. But I still don't think removing this option would be a good way to go, as I don't see the point in downloading the same data several times. It's a waste of resources.
