A programmer who adores Ubuntu, Python and open source in general. Currently pursuing a PhD in cloud computing energy efficiency. I am also interested in AI and the scientific approach to data analysis.

In my free time I draw, take photos and play the electric guitar.

Thanks for you help, Oli. Yes, I see what you mean - it's a trade-off between having a more responsive OS and saving disk space. I'll think about the methods you suggested and see which one suits me best - probably the last one, as it's a laptop and I want to minimise re-computing stuff to save battery.

If I understood you correctly - I mostly put my machine to sleep whenever I can and only do a clean shutdown when I know I won't use it for some time (or I did some upgrades).

Another very helpful option I discovered is setxkbmap -query to print out the current settings in xkb's format, which helped me to configure my Apple keyboard as desired from the terminal.

Ditto @Achim A. You just made a small mistake, as minimize follows close in other applications it should be: gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string "close, minimize, maximize:"

false alarm, it doesn't really work :( It maybe works for Chromium, but not for all applications.

comment How to unassign Alt key from window context menu in GNOME
Yes, not even Autokey can catch these combinations to enable some fixing. This is really bad. I reported this as a bug, if anyone wants to join the shout-out.

comment How can I add 'emacs' to one of the 'Show other application' in file explorer
Thanks for the answer - I couldn't get this working before. I was missing the %F flag in my emacs.desktop file.
