This is the most human method, thanks! You can set the compose key in settings—keyboard—shortcuts—typing. Right control is OK, as it doesn't clash with other modifiers.

OK, but I assume this is possible only once the image is downloaded. This is useful, but I was asking more about the documentation for the 12 or so images that are listed on the UEC site. I don't really want to download them all and reverse-engineer the information about them :)

Yes, you need one of the newer version. The version in the 13.10 repos if you do sudo apt-get install php5 is 5.5.3, so you should be OK.
