I've been using Ubuntu as my main system since 7.04 with a few short breaks using Windows or Fedora because of temporary hardware/software incompatibilities. I support FOSS projects like Ubuntu for a number of reasons but the biggest one is that the software works and it works well--often better than the non-free alternatives.

I'm no guru but in my travels I've learned a thing or two about using/debugging/fixing problems in Ubuntu which I'm always happy to share with the community. If it hadn't been for the help I've received from the Ubuntu community over the past few years I probably wouldn't have gotten past my first month of using it much less to where I am today!

comment Are there any tutorials for Linux-based audio production?
@thelinuxer glad to help. Check out this site for some basic audio production tutorials. They of course aren't using Linux, but you'll notice that versions of all the plugins they talk about are available in Ardour :P. Basically, if you can use EQ, filters, and compression well you can make some really professional sounding mixes (assuming your recording habits are good--but that site has tips for these too). Good luck!

Could it be that your network/ISP is scanning for torrent traffic and killing connections when it detects them?

comment How to revert back to older xorg?
The output of ls /etc/X11 would be useful too. Ubuntu should automatically back up your Xorg.conf file on a distribution upgrade, back reverting the config file alone won't necessarily help you if the problem isn't in the config.

Experiment using different USB ports. Not all ports/controllers are equal and you might be surprised at the different speeds between two ports.

comment How do I completely remove Windows Vista after installing Ubuntu?
If you could post the output of the command sudo fdisk -l the people answering your question could make their answer more specific to what you need to do--which could help avoiding confusion. Also please make sure you've backed up your files before doing anything.

I haven't been able to find a way to do this. However, Chrome/Chromium does this by default, so if this behavior is vital, you could try out Chrome...

comment Passively monitoring CPU activity
Running top in a terminal (or htop, sudo apt-get install htop` to install) would be a simple solution for realtime monitoring, there are also a number of indicator applets that will do this on the top panel (see here and here). As for your question about logging the info historically, I don't have any immediate ideas--but this is the interesting part of your question and I might suggest making this part of your question more prominent (so your post doesn't get marked as a duplicate).

comment Is Seagate's new “FAST Factor Boot” technology compatible with Ubuntu?
@EliahKagan My personal take is that the support agent didn't know what he was talking about and was just running his mouth and throwing in what he thought were buzzwords. I could see the GPL/drivers for extended functionality reasoning (although I'm pretty sure there are non-GPL kernel modules-ie. nvidia-they just aren't shipped with the kernel) with the first generation hybrid hard drives (the cache was managed by a Windows driver) but the Momentus XTs do everything with firmware.

comment How do I revert updates/tweaks to get to a usable GUI?
I heavily edited the original post for readability and civility. The original post probably deserved the downvotes (but they can be removed now). I'm going to edit your answer with explicit instructions on how to get those logs (recognizing that doing so would be time consuming on a phone.)

Are you sure the global proxy settings are set to route through TOR? Or are the browsers using their individual proxy support?

comment How do I revert updates/tweaks to get to a usable GUI?
it should be noted that uninstalling gnome-tweak-tool will not uninstall changes made to the system with it (ie. installed themes). It will just uninstall the GUI for making changes.

comment How do I enable the Nvidia Geforce GTX 570?
Hi Silas, there is a bug (see this Q&A) so that your graphics card will not be listed in Systems Settings even if the driver is installed correctly. You can check to make sure the Nvidia driver is installed (and learn more about how Ubuntu manages hardware drivers) here. If you are still having problems please post the specific error messages/problems you are seeing.

Tapping Alt in 12.04 will bring up the new "HUD" feature (automatically searches menu options). Holding Alt longer will provide the old behavior. Is this what you are seeing?

comment Search document by keyword using Unity Lenses
I don't know about a Unity lens, but it would be fairly easy to write a script to do this, but it would potentially take a long time to run--as it would be opening every file and scanning word by word. Useful for finding one file you lost but not very practical for daily use.

Running sudo fdisk -l in a terminal and posting the output in your question will work in lieu of a screenshot.

When you say the CD's "a good burn" what do you mean? Did you check the checksum of the .iso your downloaded and compare it with what's listed on the website? askubuntu.com/q/31888/63478
