I've been using Ubuntu as my main system since 7.04 with a few short breaks using Windows or Fedora because of temporary hardware/software incompatibilities. I support FOSS projects like Ubuntu for a number of reasons but the biggest one is that the software works and it works well--often better than the non-free alternatives.
I'm no guru but in my travels I've learned a thing or two about using/debugging/fixing problems in Ubuntu which I'm always happy to share with the community. If it hadn't been for the help I've received from the Ubuntu community over the past few years I probably wouldn't have gotten past my first month of using it much less to where I am today!

Can I make Ubuntu boot from a SD card? Agree with the above comment with the small disclaimer that it does depend on your BIOS to some extent. Older BIOSes might not support booting from their SD card readers, newer ones should. You could probably circumvent this even on an older BIOS by using a USB SD card reader. |

How to check if a cdrom is in the tray remotely (via ssh)? I was wondering if there would be a way to do it with installed software. I love questions like this because you can see so many different ways to do the same thing. I'd wager that creative use of grep, regular expressions, and another pipe or two could make this more "pretty"--but who knows if it'd be worth the time :P |

failed to install ubuntu 12.04 with usb stick could you try running it from the command-line? the installer's name is ubiquity. Also, do you want to replace your Ubuntu 10.04 with 12.04, upgrade it to 12.04 or install it alongside the old one? |

Can I disconnect an ejected drive even if it is still spinning? I can verify that this is normal behavior on all of my USB external hard drives. The hard drive controller will not spin down as long as it has power. Just make sure all partitions are unmounted and unplug it and you will be fine! |

using OLD computer - system getting very slow Adobe Flash Player (which plays Youtube videos) is a resource hog no matter what OS you use. You could try enrolling in Youtube's [HTML5 trial](www.youtube.com/html5), and your system might run a little faster--but streaming video on old hardware is going to be a touch slow no matter. |

how to sync email client between ubuntu and windows for seamless use of mails and archives Mozilla Thunderbird, will run in Windows and Ubuntu. I tried having them share configuration files and a database once though and it was somewhat buggy. You might have more luck just sharing the database but I'm not sure. Good luck. |

Firefox completely consuming the OS I suspect this is a problem with either Adobe Flashplayer, or whatever Java plugin you are using. Try disabling them one at a time and see if the problem goes away. |

Restart service that manages “Windows share” folders Ah, i misread the from...to... order in your question. While you have the Windows share mounted could you please paste the output of service --status-all? I don't know the name of the service that mounts Windows shares but I'm guessing it will have either cifs or smbfs in the name. |

Screen tearing while browsing the internet (chrome+firefox) in ubuntu 12.04 intel 4000 graphics Glad to hear your problem is gone. If it was the kernel, you could have just uninstalled the 3.5.x kernel (or just chosen an older kernel from the Grub menu) rather than completely re-installing. |

Ubuntu 12.04 won't shut down try pressing the Esc key at this screen to see what it is actually doing. Also try sudo shutdown -P now from a terminal. |

How do I make brightness settings persist across rebooting? then it sounds like it is when lightdm loads that it is going 15. have you tried using the system-settings/brightness and lock graphical slider to adjust the brightness or have you only been using hardware keys? |

How do I fix the HDMI/DVI display output with Intel HD 4000 Graphics in 12.04? Ubuntu doesn't have an xorg.conf file by default. you can create one with sudo xorg --configure and then move it to the correct directory sudo mv xorg.conf /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ |

Does Ubuntu come with disk partitioning in the installer? Could you clarify your question a little more? What exactly do you require for partitioning capabilities? Ubuntu can automatically install itself alongside Windows, or you can manually adjust/create partitions. All of these capabilities have been addressed in other question/answer pairs here, but I'm unsure which ones to best point you towards. Thanks! |
