I've been using Ubuntu as my main system since 7.04 with a few short breaks using Windows or Fedora because of temporary hardware/software incompatibilities. I support FOSS projects like Ubuntu for a number of reasons but the biggest one is that the software works and it works well--often better than the non-free alternatives.

I'm no guru but in my travels I've learned a thing or two about using/debugging/fixing problems in Ubuntu which I'm always happy to share with the community. If it hadn't been for the help I've received from the Ubuntu community over the past few years I probably wouldn't have gotten past my first month of using it much less to where I am today!

comment My IBus pinyin broke with 14.04 release upgrade
I ran this fix, which didn't work at first, then tried ibus restart which also didn't fix it, then both manually flipped from double pinyin to full pinyin in the GUI settings and ran sudo ibus restart which fixed it, but I can't tell which one it was that fixed it...

comment How do I import Amazon MP3s with Banshee and the new Amazon Cloud Player?
Andre- One reason I like Banshee over Rhythmbox is because I can do everything (buying, downloading and importing) from within Banshee and in a matter of a few clicks. However, if you could post an answer with your method I think that others might find it useful.

Andre- glad that it helped. However it sounds like either Amazon caved or the Banshee team found a workaround as it is working for me again without the workaround. One of the other answers suggests that if you use the updates from the Banshee Team PPA it will work again normally. You could try that.

Ah, well I do use their PPA so that would make sense. Can you verify that the update hasn't hit the main repos yet and is only available from the ppa?

Woohoo! It looks like our correspondence with Amazon worked! They reverted to the old system. You can now once again download the files from within Banshee by clicking on the "download your music now" link! Since you noticed this I'll accept your answer if you edit it to make it a little more specific and clear.

I find it hard to believe that the user agent switcher solution didn't work, what error/problem are you encountering? On the other hand, I would be very interested to hear more details about how you installed the Amazon MP3 downloader. Theoretically they have stopped supporting the downloader for Linux, so it shouldn't work at all, period. If you've managed to make it work though, I'd love to hear how...

Like I said, I used to do it this way, so I know it works, it just stopped working at some point. I wonder if our feedback actually caused them to revert to the old behavior... I will check this out next time I buy an album. Do you know if you can purchase from within Banshee and if the Banshee hook on that link will work?

Hi Carlos, thanks for your answer. Are you sure that this method still works (in the last couple months) with a Linux user agent? I ask because this is exactly how I used to download the music, but now I get a Linux not supported dialog both using this method and downloading from cloud player.

comment Why is the google PPA reenabled after an upgrade to a new release?
I just noticed that something went wrong with this process in the last month and the Google distro was unauthorized and for some reason hasn't reauthorized itself. I'm hoping manually reinstalling the package will reset things.

Good point, I had forgotten to mention that you can still download the files one by one. I usually buy music a couple albums at a time though, so downloading each song individually would take forever. In regards to your original commentary, I should point out that when I called them they were pretty responsive to my concerns and said they would pass them along to the developers and get back to me.

I got a preliminary email back from a customer service rep. saying that he would need 1-2 business days to look into the matter. Already a much better response than I've gotten from certain other companies, who see the word "linux" and take it as an excuse to stop providing customer service regardless of what the problem is.

Ah, so a false alarm indeed. I dug around a little upstream but I was looking for the wrong thing and missed the renaming bit. Thanks!

comment How to organize periodic maintenance tasks?
I'm a little confused. If you don't want them scheduled but also don't want to call them manually, then what exactly are you hoping to be able to do? Is your question just about how to write a shell script that will call them all at once so that you can run them whenever you have time? Or are you hoping for a program that would manage such a script for you?

ah, gotcha. well you could always throw a launcher on your desktop or wherever, (or put a symlink in /usr/bin if you are more of the CLI type) linking to your scripts in their respective cron directories. Thne whenever you have time you could click the launcher or run the symlinked command.

comment Can't connect to certain HTTPS sites
Were you using the router before or is it new? Also, you haven't done anything silly and upgraded your ssl packages or anything from a default install? I'm accessing all of those sites fine (well, through my proxy at least, China randomly blocks ssl protocol otherwise), so I'm guessing the problem lies either with the router or with an upgraded/installed package.

comment Is there any way for selecting text in Ubuntu server?
@Alvar that is what I do for my local virtualized headless servers, only time I access them directly is when there is a problem with the ssh server. Because the server is local you aren't going to get any more lag using ssh than you would using it directly, and having copy/paste, windowing, etc. capabilities makes such a difference for productivity.

I'm pretty sure that periodic is just an implementation of cron. "The periodic utility is intended to be called by cron(8) to execute shell scripts located in the specified directory" (ibid). So if periodic provided the behavior you wanted before, I don't see any reason why cron wouldn't work now.
