comment Where are commands `fg`, `bg` and `jobs` installed?
I think you're mostly right, @zwol, especially if the command needs to manipulate the shell's state. If it is manipulating the systemwide kernel state, however, I think any executable with suitable permissions ought to be able to do that. This is probably why sysctl is not a built-in, for example.

comment How to access Samba shares in Lubuntu 12.10
If you want to connect as a particular user, use smb://username@smb_server/some_folder. Under Lubuntu 14.10, this brought up a password dialog for me and then connected with the expected ownership and privileges.

Sorry the community has let you down so far. :( Unless you are talking about NICs and disk drives, Linux hardware support can be a real challenge.

BTW, @JFA, I tried sudo service networking restart but it didn't work. It responded with "stop: Unknown instance: networking stop/waiting". I tried sudo service network-interface restart INTERFACE=eth0 and that worked, however.

comment Editing dns-nameservers in /etc/network/interfaces without a restart
Networking is so fundamental I didn't know there was a service to restart. It seems like a good alternative. Thanks for cluing me into that approach, @JFA. I added it to my answer.

There was nothing wrong with the SSH connection to the server in question. That server just needed its DNS settings adjusted.
