I suspect you're right. I generally do use Thunar. I just removed Nautilus completely - we'll see if that fixes it. (I'll accept this answer if I can go a few computer reboots without it happening again)

Wouldn't it be far simpler to just install vim than learn a new set of restrictions, limitations, and short cuts?

Whoohoo! That did it. Not sure why the gnome mixer worked when the others didn't, but thanks!

comment Is using a VirtualBox safer than using WINE?
Depending on how you got your copy of XP, you might be able to purchase an install disc for a reasonable amount of money. For example, I needed to re-install Vista on a laptop for a family friend, and I was able to get an install CD from Dell. (Likely only works for OEM from the manufacturer. Either way, you must have a valid key already)

@William - numlockx on did the trick askubuntu.com/q/5140/6161 showed how to get it run when the keyboard is plugged in. Dump the numlockx into an answer and I'll accept it. Thanks for your help!

I have it, and it will let me set the numlock to on. Is there a way I can tell it to run each time the keyboard is plugged in?

@William no dice on the BIOS - there wasn't anything about numlock in there.

@William re: checking the numlock_on box - there is no numlock_on setting, so there's no box to check. (I'm going to go check the BIOS settings... I'll let you know there)

@William: I'm pretty sure the 'numlock_on' you mentioned is what I'm looking for - see my edit to the question.
