comment Do I need same monitor sizes and resolutions for multi monitor support
I can't speak to 12.04, but I have used both 10.04 and 11.10 with dual monitors of differing resolutions.

Ah - yeah, I never used those. I do the majority of my interactions with files from the commandline anyway, so that's no loss for me. Thanks for solving this mystery for me!

I do have use dopbox and hasn't seemed to be hampered by the lack of Nautilus... So far at least, this has prevented the behaviour.

I suspect you're right. I generally do use Thunar. I just removed Nautilus completely - we'll see if that fixes it. (I'll accept this answer if I can go a few computer reboots without it happening again)

Wouldn't it be far simpler to just install vim than learn a new set of restrictions, limitations, and short cuts?

Whoohoo! That did it. Not sure why the gnome mixer worked when the others didn't, but thanks!

comment Is using a VirtualBox safer than using WINE?
Depending on how you got your copy of XP, you might be able to purchase an install disc for a reasonable amount of money. For example, I needed to re-install Vista on a laptop for a family friend, and I was able to get an install CD from Dell. (Likely only works for OEM from the manufacturer. Either way, you must have a valid key already)

@William - numlockx on did the trick askubuntu.com/q/5140/6161 showed how to get it run when the keyboard is plugged in. Dump the numlockx into an answer and I'll accept it. Thanks for your help!

I have it, and it will let me set the numlock to on. Is there a way I can tell it to run each time the keyboard is plugged in?
