Zbunjeni you're a scholar and a gentleman - too bad the person you were giving tech support to for free didn't give you credit! I want to buy one of these at best buy, and I guess it still isn't clear how much of a hassle it would be to keep this version of the Intel Wireless 7260 device working smoothly on ubuntu 14.04

comment Ubuntu sometimes starts swapping like crazy for no reason
I'm seeing this right now on precise. The consistent standout on iotop is compiz. Other standout is Chrome GPU process. Killing GPU process doesn't help. Background: I run lots of browser tabs (so frustrating how every web page demands app-level memory and cpu resources now!). But only rarely does compiz seem to thrash like this. Frustrating.

comment How to network two Ubuntu computers using ethernet (without a router)?
The answer using the "shared" method in NetworkManager at askubuntu.com/a/3117/6130 is much simpler, requires no configuration on one of the computers, and allows one of the computers to share an internet connection. It is the same as what @Robert Ancell is saying in his answer here.

comment How to add metadata to images using Shotwell
Thanks! But as the OP found, this Edit Title menu item is not visible when shotwell is run from the file manager or the command line (i.e. in some sort of "viewer" mode). Sad. See my bug report at bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shotwell/+bug/1393463

comment How to add metadata to images using Shotwell
Thanks for clarifying this! But this functionality should be provided in the viewer also. As described by the Library of Congress at blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/2011/10/… it is an important, basic feature to see and add a description to a photo. At the least, the menu item should be grayed out, and this should be explained in the documentation. It is very confusing to have the documentation list an option which isn't there. See more at my bug report: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shotwell/+bug/1393463

comment How do I remove or hide old kernel versions to clean up the boot menu?
I second the question from @spacediver - this is a crazy-slow process when you have 38 unneeded kernels, since as each one is uninstalled it goes thru all the remaining ones while generating a new grub.cfg. That is what we call an N^2 operation - it processes a kernel about (38^2 / 2) = 722 times, and is very slow. Surely Ubuntu can come up with something better....

This has changed to just System -> Startup Applications, in Precise 12.04 at least.

comment Is there a VRML2 (VRML97 / WRL) viewer?
As of Ubuntu Trusty 14.04, view3dscene is also packaged, as discussed at this (duplicate) question: (VRML) Files, How to Render - Ask Ubuntu. It has a much more intuitive interface than whitedune for simple viewing.

comment (VRML) Files, How to Render
view3dscene is packaged in the standard ubuntu archive for safe, convenient installation via your choice of package management tools as of Trusty 14.04 LTS. As noted in Is there a VRML2 (VRML97 / WRL) viewer? - Ask Ubuntu‌, whitedune is an option in earlier versions of Ubuntu, back to lucid 11.10, but the interface in view3dscene is much more intuitive.
