Which version of Kate are you using? I'm also running Kate on 14.04, but In my system the color are working. Please add the kate --version to the question. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04, Kate: 3.14.13, Qt: 4.8.6, and KDE 4.14.13

comment Exporting and importing Kickoff Application Launcher's menu?
You mean kickoff settings, such as modern, hotkey, etc, or do you mean the application list (tree-structure, custom applications, etc)?

comment How to make a jar file run on startup & and when you log out?
@Codevalley, as I mentioned, this method is for the SysV init. To use service or other command you'll need to write a upstart job. But if you are going to do this, you should write a systemd one (since it is becoming the standard)

comment How to use GTK/GNOME notifications services in Java?
The library jar is located in: /usr/share/java/gtk.jar, and the native library is located in: /usr/lib/jni/libgtkjni-4.1.2.so. You will need to add the native library to your environmnet, you can do that by adding -Djava.library.path=/usr/lib/jni/ to the java command line.

Do you have any PPA installed? What is the output of: ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/? Finally, does sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade returns OK?
