comment avconv assert error mpah.frame_size when trying to convert WAV to MP3 under 14.04
How was the input file created? I'm still interested in attempting to duplicate this (and @Exeleration-G your CAF input would be useful too).

Please provide the input file so I can attempt to duplicate the issue with ffmpeg.

comment Why does my system shut down when running ffmpeg?
That does not rule out overheating which a few users have claimed to experience when performing CPU intensive commands of longer durations.

comment Why does my system shut down when running ffmpeg?
There is very little information here to provide much help. Are you using a laptop? Is it overheating? Video encoding is very CPU intensive.

comment ffmpeg: installing from repository or compiling from source?
@Dan Then I assume it failed during configure (possibly due to previous failure of compilation of any required external library) or make, but it is only a guess without any actual error messages.

comment Incorrect duration time in Audacious or any musical player when convert with ffmpeg or avconv
Glad it worked. You can provide and accept a full answer to your own question so others know a solution was found. I don't recommend /use/bin/ for your binary. You can put it in /usr/local/bin/ instead (or elsewhere in your PATH) and then you can keep the fake "ffmpeg" package for other dependent packages.

comment Incorrect duration time in Audacious or any musical player when convert with ffmpeg or avconv
Instead of providing ffmpeg from FFmpeg, Ubuntu uses a fork that supplies avconv and a fake "ffmpeg" which are often buggy. What happens if you download a recent build of ffmpeg from FFmpeg (just download, extract, and execute) and then manually use it to convert to MP3? Does the resulting file display the correct information in the players?
