comment Merge multiple webm files using avconv
Please download a recent ffmpeg build and then show some info about your inputs. It will help me provide an answer, and avconv doesn't have the functionality of what I'm going to suggest. Include the full output of: ffmpeg -i input0.webm -i input1.webm -i input2.webm, etc.

comment Merge multiple webm files using avconv
The fake ffmpeg from Libav is what was deprecated for avconv; not ffmpeg from FFmpeg. Unfortunately the maintainer refused to clarify that in the message resulting in confused users (and some think it was the intended effect).

comment Ffmpeg 2.5.2 executable not replacing existing version
I'm not sure why it was not persistent for you. Also, I don't know why ~/bin doesn't seem to be in the $PATH by default since it's already in ~/.profile last I checked, but that was a while ago since I'm not personally using Ubuntu. Anyway, if you found a solution you can provide it as an answer.

If you log out of your current desktop environment session and then log in is the behavior persistent?

Try running . ~/.profile, then hash -r, then ffmpeg.

comment Ffmpeg 2.5.2 executable not replacing existing version
Please show the output of echo $PATH, ls ~/bin, and hash. Are you using the same user account that you used to compile?

comment VLC unable to play wmv
Yeah, it can be confusing; especially when the fork used names (ffmpeg, libav, libraries, etc) already used by FFmpeg.

comment VLC unable to play wmv
FFmpeg was not removed from Debian because of bugs, but because the package maintainer is one of the former FFmpeg developers who switched to the Libav fork and decided to force his agenda on the users.

comment VLC unable to play wmv
@Kevin Correct. ffmpeg is not provided by libav-tools. Can you provide a short sample input file so we can attempt to duplicate this issue?
