Thanks for the help with this. I have been getting lots of other ip ranges showing up in nethogs too when nobody is using the machine. I think I have got a problem still as I seem to be using about 500Mb per hour in traffic.

I just had a problem with my dual boot after upgrading win8 to win8.1 and in the end all I had to do was reinstall grub to the boot partition. Then both show up in the grub menu on boot.
