comment How to call a older version gcc?
I'd say you might be asking for problems as some of the bindings generated on the older versions of the compiler might not be compatible with the later operating system. So things using shared object libraries might have difficulty. Why not just use the latest version?

Make sure you keep good backups! btrfs is still not considered totally production level item.

Not much information here has been provided for any of us to really give you a definitive action. You'll have to add a lot more information and do some detective work unfortunately. One ramdom thought I had was if you had sufficient SWAP space to support your entire memory and system contents as well as whatever is currently in swap space, as if I recall this is where all of the image is stored.

NOTE: Unless overridden, the package selected by apt-get will be the same bitiness as the underlying OS if at all possible.

Looks like you have a marginal drive. Could also be one with connector tolerance problems (again a hardware issue).

What about reinstalling 14.04 LTS from scratch AFTER pulling off any files that you save/restore. I have had problems with doing upgrade installs in the past. Also, it could save you a lot of anguish, time, effort, etc....rather than sticking with what you have and slogging through it.

Not very much here to help anybody diagnose and provide you with useful answers. Why are you so sure that your hardware is ok? Also, why not upgrade to a later version of Ubuntu because you may have some type of driver problem?

Have you already done the appropriate steps to integrate the new disk into your ubuntu instance: partition, format, configure to mount upon startup?
