comment What's the best way to avoid getting hacked by anyone, e.g. governments or other criminals?
About the only safe computer is one that is turned OFF. The next best thing is to NEVER connect to the internet. Other than that, there remember you are dealing with complicated software millions of lines of code that probably cannot be absolutely verified (i.e. bugs). Also, no emcryption can with absolute certaintity can be considered unbreakable. Again, it is much easier to dis-prove (break) something that prove it ABSOLUTELY correct.

Try not using Network Manager and configuring the interfaces manually.

comment log files too big
It would be helpful if you provided the syslog settings being used. I suspect that you are setting the level too low and getting too much information. It could also be that you have a debug settings on the driver set.

comment Add partition to unallocated partition
Would be very helpful to provide the current partition configuration, and what you want the destination to be.

comment Internet in Ubuntu 14.04 goes fast and then slow
Remember to examine all the software interactions too, not just the hardware and external stuff. That is helpful of course, but you might be having some CPU starvation problems too.
