if you type in a terminal uname -a can you paste the output? I think you have the wrong version maybe have a 32 bit version and trying to install the 64 bit

hummm... I have run that command on my machine and it brought up the machine name on Ubuntu. Do you have samba installed? Is there a separate samba server on your network?

try nmblookup -A xxx.xxx.x.x where x is the ip address of the machine. So I would do nmblookup -A 192.168.1.6 and it would return the name of my machine. You will need to do that for each machine.
