Programming: Went from the BASICs to C, C++ and Java (in Uni). Was learning Python when I first joined Stackoverflow. Now I've shifted towards Clojure. Hoping to master Haskell and OCaml some glorious day. My usual hacks are in bash or python, for I live in the command line.

BSc in CS, now studying towards MSc in CS in the University of Eastern Finland.

Other interests Functional programming ties well with mathematics. I like Linux, Nethack and XMonad.

Please remember to add warning about usage of GUI windows. Unnecessary windows popping up can induce rage on advanced users.

The commonly used line between GUIs and TUIs (textual UI) is the size of the "atom": is it a pixel or a character?

Quoting doesn't harm, but $() already returns a single token, ie. no quoting is necessary.

Perhaps better to talk about Ubuntu alone because xterm doesn't do tabs. And that counts a lot.

comment How to reset administrative password without the use of a “p” key.
This is a windowsism. Nothing wrong with the answer but doesn't work on linux as is and is just worth a mention.

comment Create alias with paramater in the middle
+1. Functions are the more generalized aliases suitable for this. And just to make the message clear: you don't have to create an alias; the function name will work fine in the command line.

comment What is the difference between `command` and `./command`?
@hguser: ./xx and xx would be the same only if your current directory is on the $PATH and there wouldn't be any other executables named xx in dirs in $PATH before your cwd.
