It is impossible to drink a gallon of milk in an hour.

I have done so.

Therefore, I can do the impossible.

comment Can't boot into GUI after removing Ubuntu Desktop to get pure Lubuntu
@Samik I don't know why I can't read/type that correctly, but it is acpi, as you say it should be.

@Samik aspci was a typo. It was just apci.

comment Can't boot into GUI after removing Ubuntu Desktop to get pure Lubuntu
@EliahKagan I have not found the answer to the main thrust of the question: the GUI won't boot. The only thing I figured out was that I was stupidly trying to boot from a USB with the wrong USB. I still don't have the GUI back when I take the USB out. Sorry if I was unclear.

No luck reinstalling lightdm. And yes, I could wipe the computer and start from scratch, but I'd really like to avoid that if at all possible.

No luck with startx. And reinstalling all the packages that I uninstalled is somewhat counterproductive. I'd rather just find the specific thing that's causing the problem and fix that.

@thefourtheye I'm not sure how I'd do that without the GUI...

@thefourtheye Nothing jumps out at me but it's a lot of information and I don't really know what I'm looking at.

@thefourtheye How do I access the contents of /etc/fstab when I can't boot the computer?

@Frank It's a standard install using the whole disc. No separate partitions.

@dobey Yup, I had done all that stuff when I installed HAL. Then again when I reinstalled Flash and HAL. No luck.

comment Can I make a second startup USB by simply coping the contents of existing one?
I did get startup disk creator to create the bootable firewire device, but I'd still like to know the answer to this just to satisfy my own curiosity.

comment Why use apt-get upgrade instead of apt-get dist-upgrade?
Thank you for not only summing up the differences between the two, but also explaining the situations where one might be better than the other. This was exactly what I was looking for.

I'm not sure... How would I go about finding that out? And I'm not sure I'd be entirely comfortable removing all of the boot entries without specific instructions on how to add new ones back in...

comment “invalid EFI file path” while booting Windows
Nope. Hadn't messed around with grub at all. Wouldn't even know where to begin. Or how to clean it up. And I definitely don't know enough to start messing around in a file that starts off in big bold letters: "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE."

I don't know about ntfs... It's whatever was factory installed. I found a couple of different things in that file that sounded like Windows menu entries. Here's the entire thing: pastebin.com/kGKPWbBH
