I'm a physicist working on air pollution and global warming.
Of course, I spend most of my time programming.

Problem installing Python-Dev Do you have any suggestions there? I was using --system-site-packages. |

Problem installing Python-Dev Okay, I will try to stick to Ubuntu packages. But this whole problem started because I can get numpy working fine, but can't get numpy imported inside a virtualenv. Having a working virtualenv system for Python development is definitely the goal. Thanks again. |

Problem installing Python-Dev Okay, your first statement: there are other packages (like gdal) that would be much easier if I could install through PIP. Your second point, I can try that and see what happens. Thanks. |

HP Compaq 2510p wireless disabled by hardware switch Perhaps your answer would be improved by giving instructions (or at least linking to them) for restoring the BIOS? |

Why does top freeze? Out of curiosity, where is a good place to go online for Ubuntu questions? I can't put them on StackOverflow or (now I know) AskUbuntu because they are off-topic. Certainly there must be somewhere to ask such questions of the experts. (Bug reports not really be much use if I am trying to learn something.) |

Can I set Superuser Inside the Launcher? Thank you! That is a great solution (I went with the gksu method, my laptop has a high-end monitor and I couldn't get the Gnome settings working at all). This is still kind of an ugly work around for an Ubuntu problem, but I'm happy with the result. |

Can I set Superuser Inside the Launcher? For some reason your first solution (the gksu solution) isn't working. It looks like it is working fine, but in the end the screen brightness isn't reset like it is if I just SUDO. Can you give me your method for writing this .desktop file? Thank you for your help. |

Screen Brightness Stuck on high on an HP dv7t laptop Is there any good way to script this, or add it to a launcher? I do this every time I boot up my computer now and I would prefer it I could run this command with a simple double click. The problem, of course, is that I need to be SU to execute the command. |

Screen Brightness Stuck on high on an HP dv7t laptop This actually worked for me. And thank God. Though I do feel like this is a woefully sad solution, and something that I imagine would be easy enough to script in the System Settings. I guess I just have such high hopes for Ubuntu. Thank YOU though. Great call. |

Screen Brightness Stuck on high on an HP dv7t laptop @SeyedMohammad I was originally using the open-source drivers, but since I noticed this problem I have switched to using the proprietary drivers. Unfortunately, there has been no change at all. Good thought though! I was hoping it would work too! |

Unable to Import Digital Photos @wild_oscar I contacted all the Linux gurus I know and have spent non-trivial amounts of time trying to solve the problem. I have been completely unsuccessful. I only chose the below 'use a card reader' solution because I gave up. I'd be happy to dig through source code and try and fix the issue, but I can't tell what the issue is on any technical level. Tell me if you make any progress. |

Unable to Import Digital Photos Okay, after much effort and searching, I have given up and bought a card reader. Sad, really. I had such high hopes for Ubuntu. |

Unable to Import Digital Photos I don't have an external card reader, no. I might try that, or just download them on a friend's computer. Since my original post, I found this was a bug on the official bugs list: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/995886 And if I can't find a good work around, it will seriously slow me down. For now, I guess, maybe an external card reader is the solution. |

Unable to Import Digital Photos I am having the same problem as these people: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/995886 Any work around would be great, these are wedding photos and people are not going to be patient with me. |

Supported Hardware List Yeah, that has a lot of information. But, of course, not the newest series of HP laptops. And certainly not mine. It's a good source though, I hadn't seen that. |
