comment How do you reset a USB device from the command line?
You need to run these commands as root/sudo, and it will not work on all systems (on some, you'll need to replace ehci_hcd with ehci-pci. More info on this solution (perhaps where it came from?): davidjb.com/blog/2012/06/…

comment Missing date & time from top panel of Unity Desktop - Ubuntu 14.04
Warning: the dconf trick doesn't just restore the clock. It also resets your clock settings, so if you have customized them... goodbye to your settings. I wish I hadn't tried that -- pkill datetime had already restored the clock to my UI.

revised Firefox spellcheck keeps changing dictionary to es_CU even after I changed to en_US in about:config

comment Firefox spellcheck keeps changing dictionary to es_CU even after I changed to en_US in about:config
It's a year later (Firefox 40 on Ubuntu 14.04)... but for what it's worth, when right-click here in this comment-editor box, and select English (United States) from the Languages , about:config shows the spellchecker.dictionary setting to be en-US, not en_US. Similarly, it uses a hyphen for the other variants, e.g. en-GB, en-ZA etc. So I wonder if putting "en-US" in your user.js would have made a difference.

By running Firefox as root, wouldn't you just be changing the root user's profile settings? Not to mention making it easier for malware to compromise security--I can't think of any good reasons to run a web browser as a superuser.

comment Upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04: “No new release found”
YES YES YES thanks this is the first thing that worked for me after hours of struggle. All the other checkboxes are disabled because 13.10 is EOL now and I had to manually change the apt-get sources (help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades) but it kept saying there was no new release until I changed the "notify" setting as you said.

comment How can I edit Nautilus Places sidebar and Unity QuickList?
Also note that you'll need to kill and restart nautilus for these changes to take effect: pkill nautilus should do the trick.

Thank you, this is a reasonable answer and works great in 14.04. This is not 1999; I'm done with recompiling my operating system just to make it work!

comment How to list all installed/activated Apache modules on a server
And FYI the enabled modules can be found listed as symlinks in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled - a2enmod and a2dismod are helper commands to manage the enabled modules.
