The selection of the session is not the problem. When choosing gnome3, it falls back from the moment I'm logged in. I've tried plenty of tricks (often resulting in having to reset things from the command line at startup), but none seemed to work. I've given up for now, and sticking with Unity.

I'm sure it's possible: "Note that I had this problem before, and I was able to (accidentally) get it to work in Ubuntu 11.10, so it's not likely to be a hardware error."

I did try the additional drivers (fglrx), but they either cause my system to boot in low graphics mode, or they change nothing at all.
