comment What fast image viewers are available for Ubuntu?
There is a rather small number of actually different free jpeg decoder implementations out there. I'm guessing that most image viewers use the standard libjpeg6 library, which is included by default by pretty much all Linux distributions and was last updated back in 1998. That code is just the JPEG group's free reference code. Viewers that embed their own decoder probably also just use something based on the reference implementation. So, speed differences will be based on how efficiently the app handles the pixels after they come out of decoder and if they do pre-fetching.

comment Removing nvidia drivers without killing kubuntu-desktop (Kubuntu 12.04)
To avoid having the drivers that come with Kubuntu be installed, I guess you could start the install without an NVIDIA graphics card in the machine. Then install CUDA, then add the graphics card.

I installed CUDA and the NVIDIA drivers on Kubuntu 12.04 and didn't have any issues. I think I just installed the new drivers without uninstalling anything, and X was automatically reconfigured to use the new drivers.

comment Any way to get colored icons in alt-tab task switcher in KDE?
Awesome! This worked beautifully. I edited the file manually because applying the patch didn't work for me. Maybe because I don't have the editconf folder on my machine. I was planing on patching KDE myself to fix this and thought that I would have to recompile some part of KDE. Very cool that the look and feel of the windows is defined in QML.

Yes, I had a very, very hard time keeping the expletives out of my initial question. I ended up reverting back to 10.04 for this and other reasons. I'm leaving the question open in the hopes that more people see how completely lame this change, and the attitude behind it, is.
