I work for the Yorba Foundation developing high-quality applications for the GNOME desktop. I led development of Shotwell, a photo manager, Geary, a lightweight email client, and California, a GNOME 3 calendar. You can follow me on the Yorba blog.

comment Ubuntu 13.04 Geary - how to run in the background?
Does Thunderbird have a daemon? That's different than running in the background or while hidden.

comment How to setup geary with IMAP and SSL/TLS encription?
Geary doesn't currently support POP3, only IMAP. Make sure you're pointing it to an IMAP server.

comment Ubuntu 13.10 Mail Authentication
Geary uses libsecret, which in turn uses gnome-keyring as its backend on Ubuntu.

comment Geary Mail keeps crashing in ubuntu 12.10?
What kind of server are you connecting to? You might try running Geary like this to see its log: $ geary --debug

comment Shotwell with Dropbox
Also, you can specify Shotwell's data directory on the command-line using the -d option, i.e. "shotwell -d /home/jack/Dropbox/shotwell-data" This avoids symlink problems.

comment How to use Glades ActionGroup correctly?
Could you post more of your code? I don't understand why you would need to use the CCode modifier, you should be able to connect a handler to the signal directly and let Vala sort out the parameters.

comment How to troubleshoot photo import failure with Shotwell?
One note: the warning message you're seeing is coming from Exiv2, the metadata library Shotwell uses. It's benign and has nothing to do with your photos not being imported.

comment Is Face Recognition coming to Shotwell?
To follow up, we've committed a patch from Google Summer of Code student Valentin Barros that adds face categorization to Shotwell. The user manually selects faces and Shotwell creates folders of photos for each face. There's no automatic face recognition yet, but this is a good first step.

comment How do I make Shotwell regenerate all the thumbnails?
The problem with this solution is that any transformations the user has made to the photos -- rotation, crop, color correction -- won't be reflected in the thumbnails. Shotwell stores all thumbnails fully transformed.

comment How to setup Shotwell for multi-user access?
Yes, but the alternate user would need read/write permissions to the Shotwell data directory. There's no provisions in Shotwell for multiple processes accessing the same database file, so you definitely don't want to be doing this when the other user is running Shotwell.

comment How Do I Print Photos?
We recently accepted a patch from Nikola Radovanovic that gives Shotwell the ability to print multiple photos as well as multiple photos per page. This feature will be in 0.9, coming soon.

comment Can I export Shotwell pictures database saving all the tags?
During export if the Scaling option is Original Size and the photo is unedited (no color adjustments, crop, etc.), it's lossless. Note that changing the orientation of a photo is lossless as well, as we use the EXIF flag rather than re-encoding the rotated image.

Although lots of of improvements have been made to Shotwell since 0.5, our printing has not advanced much. We definitely would like to add those features at some point!

Could you file a ticket about the problem at trac.yorba.org? If you could explain the problem you're seeing and even supply a sample video, we'll see about fixing it.

We're currently working hard to complete 0.8. If you're running Ubuntu, Yorba maintains a PPA that will have 0.8 as soon as we release it: launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/ppa Other distro packaging usually happens in a timely manner after we release.
