sudo will also log what commands are run through it and who uses them. If you use "sudo su", you don't get this feature. (this isn't saying that "sudo su" is bad. If you need it, use it. And I sometimes use it when I keep pre-pending every command with sudo).

The other way of dealing with the line ending problem on Ubuntu is the tofrodos package. It includes two commands that will do the line ending conversion "fromdos" and "todos".

On my computer (Ubuntu 9.04), the arch command doesn't seem to exist. So I'd say uname -m is more reliable.
