comment How do I set focus follows mouse?
Since basic WM functions are not accessible in the default install, one has to wonder why this tweak tool isn't installed by default, replacing the meager default system settings software entirely.

comment How to convert a sound file to Opus
@EvanCarroll "automatic detection of speech or music to decide which encoding mode to use" from opus-codec.org. And of course you will incur a loss in quality. That's why it's a lossy codec. You said that this was never justifiable though and I gave you a good example where size is a huge issue, quality of secondary importance and a lossless source not available.

comment How to convert a sound file to Opus
@EvanCarroll Opus has specialized support for speech, MP3 doesn't. This means that you can reduce your podcasts and audiobooks significantly in size without any noticeable loss in quality. I fail to see how that is a horrible idea.

comment How can I convert mp3 to speex?
It should be noted that the speex files produced by this command line will retain none of the metadata from the mp3 files.

comment Extracting embedded images from a PDF
Would be nice to have a solution that extracts images in its native format. Re-encoding JPEGs is not really ideal.

comment How do I configure a joystick or gamepad?
I assume the first screenshot shows jscalibrator? That's exactly the software I'm searching for. Since it doesn't exist in newer versions of Ubuntu anymore, is there an alternative that actually shows what any particular button press should look like? Because I don't know what buttons 0-11 are supposed to map to so I don't know how to use jstest or jscal. If there is no such software, is there some picture that shows a reference mapping? I'm guessing X=0, O=1, square=2, triangle=4 but that's about as far as I can guess.

comment Are there any desktop clients for Soundcloud?
It's been a while since you asked this question. From the fact that there is no accepted answer, can I deduce that none of the proposed solutions ultimately worked? Either way, if you or anyone else has a solution, I'd still be interested.

comment How do I know if I changed a setting in winetricks
I'm using Wine 1.5.27 and the settings don't stick. They don't seem to have an effect either. So it might not be a question of which version you use but whether or not something else is simply broken :/

comment How to Install Okular 0.15 on 12.04 LTS?
@808sound Sorry, I didn't realize that indeed. I came here because I just wanted to install Okular 0.15 and I was happy that there is this easy way. I didn't want to imply that this solution is better in any way than yours. It just did what I needed in the most simple way possible. People downvote much too lavishly. It wasn't me though :/

comment How can I resume a download started in Chromium?
Some sites don't allow access without the right referrer, cookies or similar precautions. I know, you can fake all of this with wget. This all doesn't change the fact that chromium deleting aborted files and generally not providing a resume option is just a pain.

This just works, thanks a lot! I have no idea why you had 0 upvotes before I voted you up. Seems the OP lost interest after the failed attempt of the accepted answer.

comment How to get current gnome keyboard layout from terminal?
<rant>xkb is an undocumented hell! These multiple layout definitions don't work reliably; for me they suddenly switched at random times and after suspend it was randomly determined which of the defined layouts was in effect and -- what's worse -- independently for each keyboard attached. Yes, xkb is actually able to have different layouts for different keyboards but this is not documented anywhere as far as I know and therefore the only thing this feature does is annoy us because we can't control it. xkb, seriously, don't get me started!</rant>

Yeah, I can understand why. I just wrote my own reply though because for people who stumble on this question because they have the same problem it seems like the simplest solution.

comment How can I force the rediscovery of PulseAudio virtual sound devices?
I'm not sure if I understood your proposition though. Can I use the DNS name resolution or do I have to know the IP? I'd rather not use fixed IPs although you might say in case of the HTPC this is an ok thing to do.

comment How can I force the rediscovery of PulseAudio virtual sound devices?
Thanks for the one link. The solution there actually works in my case, too: sudo service avahi-daemon restart I didn't expect that because avahi-browse sees the devices even before the restart but I guess the restart triggers the callback to be called again which is all that is needed.

You can also try to kick it old-school and use Xinerama. Here's a howto: tldp.org/HOWTO/Xinerama-HOWTO/index.html
