comment How do I backup ssh keys?
Great list! It's harder to google for such a list than it should be. Thank you for providing it.

This just works, thanks a lot! I have no idea why you had 0 upvotes before I voted you up. Seems the OP lost interest after the failed attempt of the accepted answer.

comment How to get current gnome keyboard layout from terminal?
<rant>xkb is an undocumented hell! These multiple layout definitions don't work reliably; for me they suddenly switched at random times and after suspend it was randomly determined which of the defined layouts was in effect and -- what's worse -- independently for each keyboard attached. Yes, xkb is actually able to have different layouts for different keyboards but this is not documented anywhere as far as I know and therefore the only thing this feature does is annoy us because we can't control it. xkb, seriously, don't get me started!</rant>

Yeah, I can understand why. I just wrote my own reply though because for people who stumble on this question because they have the same problem it seems like the simplest solution.

I'm not sure if I understood your proposition though. Can I use the DNS name resolution or do I have to know the IP? I'd rather not use fixed IPs although you might say in case of the HTPC this is an ok thing to do.

Thanks for the one link. The solution there actually works in my case, too: sudo service avahi-daemon restart I didn't expect that because avahi-browse sees the devices even before the restart but I guess the restart triggers the callback to be called again which is all that is needed.

You can also try to kick it old-school and use Xinerama. Here's a howto: tldp.org/HOWTO/Xinerama-HOWTO/index.html

comment Add multimedia keyboard shortcuts in Xubuntu
@Elfy That other applications see them all right indicates to me that the so called keysym names are fine and you shouldn't need to map keycodes to them with xmodmap. I take it configuring the XFCE keyboard settings as described doesn't work either? You can also try evtest (it's in a package of the same name), see also this thread ask.fedoraproject.org/question/498/…
