Yeah, that's always an option. Though not something I want to do on more than a couple servers. Which I would have to in my setup. Hopefully Ubuntu gets updated with the newer version soon.

comment How do you deal with backports in production?
How do you figure out if a ppa is safe? I run into the same issue all the time, but I'm really leery of adding many ppa's to my production. Like launchpad.net/~tuxpoldo/+archive/munin would be what I'd add for munin, but is it safe?

A security update to Apache would require that Apache be restarted, right?

I'm not asking how to install upgrades. That's easy. Nor am I asking how to tell if security upgrades are needed. I'm asking how to be notified WHAT security upgrades need to be applied for individual servers without me having to log in.

I want to avoid installing updates that might break something or cause services to restart. Unattended upgrades could do both of those things.

Right, never selected an answer for this question. If I remember correctly, I did have a different atc user, and deleting it fixed the problem. So I'm picking this as my answer.

comment How to fix sudo: setreuid(ROOT_UID, user_uid): Operation not permitted error?
So, I was about to try setting this up again on a 12.04 test server, but from your update, I'd have to compile libgnutls26. Since I don't have enough users that LDAP auth is essential, I think I'll not use LDAP auth for the foreseeable future. Thanks for your help, Chris, especially the updates. Really appreciated.

Anon bind is not allowed on our servers. The binddn is a user created with the appropriate permissions. Read only, if I am right, it was actually created by the previous admin...

I was using a bind user that used to work perfectly on CentOS 5.something.

So, does it break vsftpd for regular system accounts, or just LDAP accounts? I really need to find some time to test libnss again. I'm positive it's the solution, but I keep missing some key configuration somewhere when I try it...

I tried libnss-ldapd, but I couldn't get it to let me authenticate via ldap. I probably missed some part of the configuration, but I can't figure out what. So, what other solutions are there?

I did find this: us.generation-nt.com/answer/… And I have tried using libnss-ldapd. It didn't work very well. Though I intend to try again.

Hmm... And it does exist somewhere. Now, to figure out if it's safe to delete. root@ws-prod-www-01:~# id atc uid=199999999(atc) gid=20(dialout) groups=20(dialout) root@ws-prod-www-01:~# getent passwd atc atc:x:199999999:20:atc:/Users/atc:/bin/tcsh

I did grep the etc files for the UID. As for why I'm using it... I'm mounting files from NFS that are owned by that UID. So it's simpler to just add the users with their existing UIDs than to go chown all the files to the new UID. I do use LDAP authentication, but I know for a fact that there is no atc user in LDAP. goes to try the id and getent commans
