I disabled it in TLP and I think it certainly helped. Not completely sure yet how my home network will behave. (I'll try on weekend). Thanks for the good tip

I am on 14.04 . And my function keys are reconfigured so I need to hit Fn+F9 to deactivate wifi. Also the notification icon registers this just okay. It seems that the biggest problem was with power management.

For now I set the window opacity in CCSM, but this affects the whole window (The top bar etc.) while the original setting only affected the backround of the commandline. But it is acceptable. So... if I understand it right, when they start shipping the newest version with Ubuntu, the option will get removed anyway? If that is the case, I just may stick with the Compiz setting. EDIT: That still does not answer this in my opinion unanswerable question: Why would anyone remove that setting? Transparent terminals look awesome...
