comment switch audio output from PA to jack, breaks audio on google-chrome
I fought with a similar problem using ALSA. For that, it was a question of creating a "default" alsa device (pcm.!default). Perhaps something similar with an alsa loopback device would work (see: remastersys.com/forums/index.php?topic=2800.0).

comment mp3 playback crackles/pops and sometimes squelches in Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit
I similar problems in a new system I just built with 13.10. I tried many suggestions that didn't work. Then I disabled (uninstalled) pulseaudio and went to just running Alsa and have not had problems since.

comment ATI Radeon X1200 Series(RS690M) graphical drivers problem
This caused errors with loading the radeon kernal module. (RS690M on a eMachines D620 laptop running 10.10). It did give me a clue. I ended up adding similar lines to xorg.conf and driconf (see answer). Thanks for the hints.

@fossfreedom The machine's running Maverick now, but I'll check tonight and see if 2.6.38 is available. Thanks.

comment Cannot open .doc files
@Sandy I think what graham is trying to say is to first open up LibreOffice Writer (without a document), and then go to the File-->Open menu, select the document, and then specify that it is a Microsoft Word ".doc" file.

comment What should I consider when purchasing a (flatbed) scanner?
I do have a scanner that doesn't have a Ubuntu driver (or at least didn't three years ago when I replaced it). Personally, I have found HP has some of the best Linux support, so I stick with them.

comment How do I get started setting up a Small Office / Home Office?
You shouldn't need a static IP address if you use a service like DynDNS. It will actually create an DNS entry for your machine and track it as it changes.

comment How to configure 5.1 surround sound through three 3.5 mm jacks?
It might be helpful to specify if you are using the default sound system that came with Ubuntu 11.04, or if you have changed to another one (i.e. alsa).

"jack" tag removed as it refers to the JACK low latency sound server [askubuntu.com/tags/jack/info ].

The Ubuntu Community Doc Automatically Mounting Partitions should tell you what you need to know.

comment Problem with the Display after moving hard drive from one laptop to another
How did you install the NVIDIA drivers in the first place? Did you use the proprietary driver tool in Ubuntu (System->Administration->Drivers -- I think [my Ubuntu boxes aren't here]), or did you download and build the source from NVIDIA?

comment composite-video-to-usb adaptor
@sawa I'm not sure what else to suggest. You might try doing an ls -lt /dev | head and see what the latest devices added were and see if they might be the correct one. Other then that, I would search the device ID (0572:262a) and see what it says.

comment ALSA lists no capture device
What other "output ports" do you have? What audio devices are you running? Assuming you new headset has a mic, does it connect through USB or plug into a 1/8" jack? Also, alsamixer will only show the level setting of the controls, not the actual volume of the thing being played.

comment How do I generate a file with suitable permissions using sprintf() & write()?
This may be better asked on Stack Overflow or Code Review. You probably don't want to use sprintf or even a temporary variable. A couple of quick suggestions for functions to consider: fprintf(), fopen(), fclose().

comment Frequent CPU hogging
Flash is notorious, especially if you use sites like Super Poke Pets which open multiple flash sessions at once. [I actually saw 80 network connections between my wife's browser and the SPP site and when she was using 1 instance of firefox on 1 SPP page with multiple habitats.]

A couple of questions (1) What happens when you try print a test page from within the Printer Properties dialog? (2) Are you setting the printer settings in the application or from the system menu?
